Cruiser Equipment

The Department’s cruisers, which for the most part are Ford Crown Victorias, are equipped with the standard law enforcement safety equipment; radios, cellular phones, radars, emergency lights and siren, spike mats to be deployed in the event of a vehicle pursuit, and medical equipment to include automatic external defibrillators.

One of the most frequently used tools for the officers is the laptop computer. Our computers are data linked by IP Mobile Net software to the Department using a separate radio frequency. We are not dependent on cellular phone service providers for connectivity. Our data is transmitted from point to point at 64 Kbps.

Used in conjunction with our Information Management Corporation (IMC) Police Mobile software the officer on the road can check a driver’s license and registration status through a link to the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles, as well as for wanted persons or stolen vehicles. Officers can use the IMC Mobile to write reports while on the road instead of having to return to the station. Our local IMC database, as well as other IMC users within the State of Maine, can be assessed in real time by the officer from their cruiser for record’s checks. This is a vital tool to protect the officer and better serve our community.

Using the computer the officers can also talk amongst themselves car to car, or with the dispatch center when the need arises. This allows sensitive information to be exchanged privately to avoid disclosure of our operations to parties who do not have a need to know.
